One Day at the 9/11 Memorial
8 am: the plaza
The memorial plaza opens at 8 am, an hour before the museum, and early morning is its quietest time. Walk the South Pool, then the North Pool and the Survivor Tree, then the Memorial Glade on the south-west of the plaza. Twenty to 45 minutes covers it. Mid-morning: the museum slot
Arrive at the pavilion 15 minutes before the slot for security. The first slot of the day is quieter as a rule. Allow about two hours for the Historical Exhibition, In Memoriam and Foundation Hall, with a break at the café on the atrium terrace. The museum ticket page explains the slot and the options.
Early afternoon: the Oculus, St. Paul’s and the Ten House
- The Oculus, next to the plaza: free to walk through, with a shopping mall and the PATH station.
- St. Paul’s Chapel on Broadway: free, with the exhibit on its nine months as a relief centre.

Late afternoon: the observatory or Battery Park
One World Observatory, on floors 100 to 102, needs a separate timed ticket and its own security; the listings give it about an hour. The alternative is the walk south through Battery Park to the ferries. Either way the plaza is open until 8 pm, and the pools are lit after dusk for a last look. The half-day version
